The Institute of medicine reported that every year 98,000 patients die in hospitals from medical errors. Thousands of the injuries and deaths are caused by nursing mistakes. These mistakes are caused by nurses from overworking. Because of the shortage the hospitals are facing nurses are working over hours. The nurses are getting tired and that's causing in medical errors.
Not w
ell trained nurses also are a reason of causing medical errors. Untrained nurses are used more often becuase of the shortage. The records show that patients are being overdosed , vital care is being delayed, and nurses are not performing procedures properly. Poorly trained nurses and overworking nurses caused the deaths of 1,700 patients and 9,548 injuries since 1995.
Nurses learn in scool about the "five rights". The "five rights" are: right patient, right drug, right dose, right time, right route. Not all nurses work according this rule, but following the five rights prevent medical errors and ensures patients' safety. For example if a nurse carries two medications for two different patients she might give the wrong dose for the patient. Nurses must be aware of what they're doing.
